In a world where nostalgia intertwines with innovation, the Efteling Spookslot Metaverse project embarked on a mission to immortalize a beloved attraction. Nestled in the heart of Efteling, the Spookslot haunted house had whispered tales and secrets for generations.
Yet, as time threatened its physical existence, a visionary team set out to capture its essence and ensure it would enchant forever in the digital realm.
Uniting Past and Future
The quest was led by a coalition of magic-makers: Efteling, PelserHartman, Weekend Creative Agency, and Boldly-XR. Their task was formidable: to translate the tangible into the digital, preserving every detail.
PelserHartman wielded advanced pointcloud scanning technology, capturing the intricate geometry of Spookslot’s every shadow and light. This was not mere replication; it was the creation of a digital twin, destined to live on in the metaverse.
A digital canvas comes to life
With over 4 billion polygons as initial scan data the team embarked on an odyssey of optimization, as the goal was to make this run on almost any device to make this iconic environment accessible to a new generation. This was one of the biggest challenges; reducing this vast data landscape to a mere 300,000 polygons
Let that sink in, that’s 0.00075% of the initial scan data, or in other words, a reduction of 99,99925%!
Yet, through this transformation, not a single detail was lost; every brush stroke, every eerie creak, was preserved.
We developed 2 technologies to make that happen:
- By developing custom optimisation algorithms that helped us bring the polycount of the structure down we achieved a world first in digital optimisation.
- Before it’s demolition, we had the opportunity to shoot an array of Gigapixel 360 photos, which, due to HDR bracketing contained multiple exposures of every space within this iconic environment. That allowed us to really polish the rudimentary textures that were made with the LiDAR scanner, overlaying the gigapixels to completely revamp the textures.
Finetuning the platform
To adapt Mozilla Hubs for the Spookslot digital experience at Efteling, we focused on simplification, custom functionality, and a thorough graphical and technical update to ensure compatibility with the NFT gate. The interface was streamlined to make navigation intuitive, with specific features added to reflect the Spookslot theme closely. We carried out a graphical overhaul to capture the attraction’s atmosphere, optimizing visuals for a smooth performance on any device.
The technical structure was revised to integrate seamlessly with the NFT gate system, ensuring secure and exclusive access. The UI/UX enhancements by Weekend Creative Agency were crucial, marrying user-friendly design with the immersive world of Spookslot, making this innovative virtual experience accessible and engaging for Efteling employees.
An Exclusive key to the haunted kingdom
We developed a special NFT gate for Efteling’s employees as part of the Spookslot experience. This NFT was a digital key, a first-of-its-kind initiative that blended Efteling’s rich storytelling with modern blockchain technology. It allowed employees unique access to a digital version of Spookslot, celebrating their connection to the attraction’s legacy. This project leveraged our expertise in digital innovation, ensuring security and exclusivity through blockchain, while creating a novel way to engage and honor the team behind Efteling.

Engagement soared as users, equipped with their NFT keys, stepped into a world where every corner held a memory, every shadow a story. The experience transcended technological boundaries, smoothly inviting all to explore Spookslot’s mysteries, regardless of the device in their hands.
