Virtual campus transforms digital education

They wanted to find a way to make online learning more interactive, engaging, and personal. The question? How do you make online classes just as interactive and dynamic as a physical classroom? And do so for every student, regardless of their experience with technology.

With a virtual campus built in Mozilla Hubs, online learning becomes interactive, social, and truly engaging.

The challenge: from passive watching to active participation

How do you make students truly feel engaged in online education? West Herts College wanted to move away from static lesson videos and endless PowerPoint slides. Their goal: to create a learning environment that feels like a physical classroom, but entirely online.

The brief was clear:

  • Improve engagement in online classes

  • Enable real-time interaction between students and teachers

  • Make it accessible to everyone, with no technical barriers

A virtual campus in Mozilla Hubs

We developed a virtual campus that is accessible directly via browser, smartphone, or VR headset, without requiring students to install any extra software. As soon as they log in, students find themselves in a dynamic 3D environment with lecture halls, workspaces, and social areas.

The campus offers more than just a place to attend lessons. It enables interactive discussions, exploration of course materials using 3D models, and the ability to ask teachers questions. Students can freely navigate, click on objects, watch videos, and collaborate on assignments in groups, all in real time.

All learning materials, from videos and PDFs to 3D models, are seamlessly integrated into the virtual environment. This creates a smooth and immersive learning experience where students and teachers can truly work together.

The impact was immediately noticeable:

 

  • Students felt more connected to each other and to the program compared to traditional online education

  • Discussions became more dynamic, and collaboration increased compared to standard online formats

  • Teachers discovered new ways of teaching through 3D content and interactive methods

  • The platform has been structurally integrated into the curriculum
