Topcon, a Japanese company specializing in optometric equipment, sought innovative ways to adapt to changing customer needs during the pandemic. Their primary objective was to host digital fairs, maintain a semblance of the traditional fair experience, and enable online meetings and lectures. They aimed to establish an environment aligned with Topcon’s style, facilitating spontaneous interactions.
With the shifting norms and habits, not everyone attends every trade show or meeting in person anymore. Ensuring constant accessibility and information dissemination became crucial. While platforms like Zoom and Teams are available for meetings, they also posed challenges.
The Topcon Project
We opted for Mozilla Hubs, a versatile VR chat room compatible with various headsets and browsers. Leveraging its open-source nature, we created tailored spaces that matched the client’s brand and needs. The design possibilities were limitless, allowing spaces like a Japanese skyline or garden, each serving distinct purposes like meetings or product displays. Well-designed spaces prove to be intuitive and engaging.
In the exhibition area, users could explore and compare devices, with the possibility to click a button for extra information about the product. A meeting room, auditorium, and social plaza were also integrated to address digital requirements.
Within Mozilla Hubs, users crafted avatars and utilized microphones, engaging in conversations through chat or voice. Presentations could be uploaded, enhancing communication. This initiative aimed to meet Topcon’s digital needs by offering exhibitions, meetings, and lectures within an immersive online setup.
Custom online environments, exemplified by Mozilla Hubs, provided a means for enjoyable remote meetings and interactions. Such settings fostered attentiveness and participation, magnifying the impact of shared information.
