In depth: The RAF Wall case

The RAF Wall is an expansive interactive wall designed to elucidate the workings of the Dowding System. This installation integrates a contemporary wooden panel adorned with illustrations, animations, and audio, employing projection mapping through projectors. Control is achieved via touch, facilitated by conductive ink. The ink establishes a circuit with the PC, powered by your body’s touch, akin to touchscreen technology.

The RAF Museum (Royal Air Force Museum) in London unveiled a new exhibition centred on the Battle of Britain. We took a specific focus on the Dowding System. In order to vividly narrate the Dowding System’s story to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. It was a collaborative effort with a renowned comic book artist. This collaboration resulted in the creation of an interactive wall spanning six meters. This innovative feature, dubbed the “RAF Wall,” became a prominent attraction within the museum.

Dowding System was a pivotal tool employed by the British Air Force during World War II, facilitating rapid communication of critical information, such as intercepted attack messages. Despite the German air force’s numerical advantage, the British air force’s prowess was significantly enhanced by this remarkable system.

Showcase RAF Wall

Consequently, the RAF was determined to showcase and elucidate this historical phenomenon in their exhibit. The solution proposed was an interactive wall, strategically designed to captivate attention and deliver information and insights through a dynamic and engaging approach—a perfect fit for a bustling museum with countless visitors.

Working collaboratively with the comic book artist, intricate illustrations and animations were crafted to methodically expound upon the Dowding System’s workings. Employing conductive ink, these depictions were carefully applied to the wooden surface. When visitors touched these painted elements, an electrical signal travelled from their hand through the conductive ink, wire, and into the connected PC. This mechanism mirrored the principle underlying smartphone touchscreens.

Through the integration of conductive ink, projectors, and projection mapping techniques, the wall’s illustrations sprung to life upon interaction.  All were accompanied by synchronized animations and soundscapes. This dynamic interplay of visuals and audio served as a captivating guide. The experience led visitors through a comprehensive explanation of the Dowding System. A sequence of animations flowed seamlessly, crafting a cohesive and engaging narrative.

Goals For The RAF Wall
